Choosing a barcode scanner

SDIO scanners vs Handheld scanners
SDIO scanners attach to PDAs to form a single device. Handheld scanners connected to PDAs are effectively 2 devices. The suitability of having a single device or 2 devices depends on the user’s preference. Some users prefer the manoeuvrability of a separate scanner, while some users prefer to have a single device that can be handled with one hand. Cost wise, handheld scanners are cheaper than SDIO scanners.

Laser scanners vs CMOS
Laser scanners emit their own light source and hence, are able to scan in dark places. Laser scanners are also better able to read damaged barcode labels (wet, crumpled, uneven surface etc). Laser scanners are however, more expensive than CMOS scanners.

Choosing a PDA Emas Stock take works on the majority of Pocket PC PDAs running Windows Mobile 2003 and above. IPAQ PDAs from Hewlett Packard (HP) are popular models. The end customer prices range from RM 888 to RM 1800 (prices from HP Online Store), depending on specifications.

What about using Portable Terminals for stock take?
Portable terminals are handheld computers that have an integrated barcode scanner. Portable terminals are sometimes used by businesses for stock takes. The price of portable terminals are however, very expensive.

Combining a PDA and a barcode scanner is cheaper. If you still prefer to use a Portable Terminal, you may still use EMAS Stock Take. The EMAS Stock Take program works on some Portable Terminals.
